Help Center: Barcode readers and scanners
How does the code reader work?
A scanner is a device designed to read barcodes. Each scanner is equipped with a light source, which is either a laser or an LED. When a barcode label is brought close to the reader, the light is reflected from the white fields and read by the photodiode using electrical signals. Important in this process is the thickness of the black lines, since dark fields generate a stronger signal, which is decoded by the device and displayed in the form of information contained in the code. The reader works on the principle of keyboard emulation. That is, when connected via a USB cable or paired with a USB receiver, the computer recognizes the device as a keyboard. As a result, installing additional drivers is not required, as the installation is done automatically. To check whether the scanner works properly, open any text editor (such as Notepad or Word), place the mouse cursor in it and scan any barcode. With the scanner properly connected or paired, the read barcode displays immediately in the text editor.
What connectors are available with wired readers?
Most readers have a USB interface. However, some models are available with RS232 and PS2 connectors. By default, scanners are shipped with a USB cable. If the customer needs a different type of cable, this fact should be stated when placing the order
What is the wireless range of the readers?
The range of wireless readers depends on the model and the type of wireless communication. The Bluetooth module offers a shorter range of wireless operation, however, giving the possibility to connect to any mobile device, while radio communication implemented via a USB receiver offers a range of up to several hundred meters. It can be assumed that the range of wireless range can be from 10 to even 600 meters (in open space).
