A working time recorder registers employee entries and exits and stores the data in its own memory, without any additional software. Identification runs on an RFID key fob held up to the reader, and depending on the model also on a fingerprint or a PIN code. The fobs are the everyday part of the system – each one carries a unique code, so it can be assigned to a specific person. In our sets the recorder comes together with a matching batch of key fobs, so the workstation is ready to run straight out of the box.
A working time recorder is a device mounted at the entrance that registers the moment an employee arrives and leaves. It works on its own: the readings land in the internal memory and are read out over USB or a network, without installing any software. Depending on the model, memory holds up to a thousand employees and a hundred thousand entries, and reports on attendance, absence, lateness or leave can be exported straight to a spreadsheet.
Identification is normally done with an RFID card or key fob at 125 kHz, and higher models add a fingerprint and a PIN code, which lets you combine methods and raise the level of security. Devices with Wiegand support also work as an element of access control – connected to an electric strike they open the door only to an authorised person.
An RFID key fob is a passive credential the size of a keyring pendant. It has no battery: it draws energy from the reader’s field and returns its unique identification code, which the system links to a specific employee. Fobs at 125 kHz are read from a couple of centimetres, and a solid ABS housing takes daily handling far better than a card.
Compared with a card, a key fob is harder to mislay – it hangs on the same ring as the keys and survives being carried in a pocket or a toolbox. Fobs also come in several colours, so departments, shifts or access zones can be told apart at a glance.
